How to Get a Discount on Subprime Credit Cards

Subprime cards exist to charge fees. That’s the business model — and it’s exactly why those fees negotiate so well.

The fee map of the subprime world

Card Issuer / servicer First-year fee After APR
Destiny Mastercard Bank of Missouri / Concora up to $175 $49 + $12.50/mo 35.9%
Milestone Mastercard Bank of Missouri / Concora $175 $49 + $12.50/mo 35.9%
Indigo Mastercard Celtic Bank / Concora $0–$175 (tiered) up to $49 + $12.50/mo 35.9%
Total Visa Total Card / Bank of Missouri $95 program fee + $75–$125 $96/yr 35.99%
First Access Visa Bank of Missouri $75 $48 35.99%
Credit One Platinum Credit One Bank $49–$75 $99 29.74%

On a $700 limit, a $175 fee means a quarter of your line is gone before your first purchase — and the $12.50/month charge after year one ($150/year) never appears on the pricing page you applied from.

The rest of the unsecured shelf

The Concora cards aren’t the whole market. The rest of the unsecured rebuild tier negotiates the same way:

  • Fee-heavy twins of the table above: Surge Platinum ($75–$125 annual + $12.50/mo after year one), FIT Platinum ($99 first year → $125), Reflex, First Digital (limits from ~$300) and Juzt — all pre-approval cards where the first-year fee is the first thing to fall.
  • Atlanticus family: Aspire (identical 3% gas/groceries/utilities rewards to Imagine), Fortiva and Mercury (acquired by Atlanticus in September 2025) — one servicing platform, one retention menu.
  • No-fee fair-credit options: Capital One Platinum, Chase Freedom Rise ($0 annual, 1.5% back), Mission Lane (soft-pull line reviews after ~7 months), Petal 2 (cash-flow underwriting, no annual fee) and Upgrade Select.
  • Still charge, still waivable: Avant ($39 annual), OneMain BrightWay ($0–$75 annual, $300–$2,000 limits), Credit One Platinum, Total Select Visa and long-running PREMIER Bankcard.

What’s actually negotiable

  • First-year annual fee reversal. The single most-won concession. The retention desk reverses it rather than lose an account that’s still paying interchange.
  • The monthly maintenance fee. Year-two add-ons are discretionary. One retention call usually kills or shrinks them.
  • Waive the “program fee”. Total Visa’s $95 setup fee is negotiable on request, especially if you cite a no-fee competitor.
  • Step-down APR. Less common on these cards, but hardship arrangements exist — 6–12 months at a reduced rate, free to enter.
  • Refund of recent late fees. First-time or good-history late charges reverse almost automatically when asked politely.

When the discount isn’t worth it

Sometimes the right move is swapping the card entirely — a no-fee builder beats a waived fee on a 35.9% card if you qualify:

  • Secured, no annual fee: Discover it Secured (graduates to unsecured after ~7 months, first-year cash-back match), Capital One Platinum Secured ($49–$200 refundable deposit), Citi Secured, US Bank Cash+ Secured and Bank of America Customized Cash Secured. OpenSky skips the credit check entirely for a $35 annual fee.
  • Fintech builders, no deposit: Chime Credit Builder, Current Build, OnePay, Varo Believe, Extra, Tomo and Step — bank-linked instead of deposit-based, and most skip the hard credit check.
  • Paid builders — read the fee first: Self, Kikoff ($5/mo), Cleo ($14.99/mo), Ava (from $5/mo) and Grow Credit are worth it only when the monthly cost is smaller than the fee you’re leaving behind.

We’ll say that plainly when it’s true: the goal is your number going down, not a call for its own sake.
