“Up to 1 Gbps for $49.99/mo!*” *For 12 months. Then $110. Modem $15/mo. Taxes/fees extra. 2-year contract. Early termination $200.
Here’s how to read past the marketing and compare true all-in cost.
The “up to” speed lie
| Advertised | Typical real-world (peak) | What you actually need |
|---|---|---|
| 100 Mbps | 70–90 Mbps | 1–2 users, HD streaming |
| 300 Mbps | 200–270 Mbps | 3–4 users, 4K + gaming |
| 500 Mbps | 350–450 Mbps | 4–5 users, heavy 4K + WFH |
| 1 Gbps | 600–900 Mbps | 5+ users, large files, servers |
| 2 Gbps | 1.2–1.6 Gbps | Overkill for 99% of homes |
Rule: divide advertised by 1.5–2x for peak-hour reality. Fiber (AT&T, Verizon, Google Fiber, municipal) hits closer to advertised; cable (Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox, Optimum) degrades more under congestion.
The promo trap: 2nd-year math
| Provider | Promo (12 mo) | Standard (mo 13+) | Modem | 24-mo total | True avg/mo |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xfinity 500M | $45 | $85 | $15 | $2,520 | $105 |
| Spectrum 500M | $50 | $80 | $15 | $2,340 | $97.50 |
| AT&T Fiber 500M | $55 | $55 | $0* | $1,320 | $55 |
| Verizon Fios 500M | $50 | $85 | $15 | $2,340 | $97.50 |
| T-Mobile Home | $50 | $50 | $0 | $1,200 | $50 |
| Cox 500M | $50 | $85 | $13 | $2,376 | $99 |
*AT&T includes modem in fiber tiers.
The trap: you compare promo prices ($45 vs $50 vs $55) — but the 24-month average tells the real story, the same math that exposes teaser rates in deregulated electricity markets. AT&T Fiber and T-Mobile win on consistency.
The all-in comparison template (copy this)
Create a sheet with these columns for each plan at your address:
| Column | What to enter | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Provider | Name | — |
| Plan name | Exact marketing name | Website |
| Advertised speed | “Up to X Mbps” | Website |
| Promo monthly | $X (if any) | Website/cart |
| Promo months | 12, 24, etc. | Fine print |
| Standard monthly | $Y after promo | Fine print / call |
| Contract term | 12, 24, none | Fine print |
| ETF (early term fee) | $X | Fine print |
| Modem rental | $/mo (or $0 if included) | Website / call |
| Install/activation | One-time $ | Website / call |
| Regulatory recovery | $/mo | Bill / call |
| Broadcast TV fee | $/mo (if TV bundled) | Bill / call |
| Regional sports fee | $/mo (if TV bundled) | Bill / call |
| Taxes (est.) | ~8–12% of subtotal | Estimate |
| Promo total | Promo monthly × promo months | Calc |
| Standard total | Standard monthly × (24 - promo months) | Calc |
| Equipment total | Modem rental × 24 | Calc |
| Fees total | (Reg + Broadcast + RSN) × 24 | Calc |
| Install total | One-time | Copy |
| 24-mo all-in | Sum above | Calc |
| True avg/mo | 24-mo all-in ÷ 24 | Calc |
Real-world example: 3 plans at same address (Houston, 77002)
| Metric | Xfinity 800M | AT&T Fiber 1G | T-Mobile Home |
|---|---|---|---|
| Promo monthly | $55 (12 mo) | $55 (12 mo) | $50 (no promo) |
| Standard monthly | $105 | $55 | $50 |
| Modem rental | $15 | $0 | $0 |
| Regulatory fee | $3.50 | $0 | $0 |
| Contract | 24 mo | 12 mo | None |
| ETF | $200 | $180 | $0 |
| 24-mo all-in | $3,132 | $1,320 | $1,200 |
| True avg/mo | $130.50 | $55.00 | $50.00 |
Xfinity looks cheapest at $55 promo — but 24-mo average is 2.6x T-Mobile.
Hidden gotchas to check
| Gotcha | How to verify |
|---|---|
| Data caps | Xfinity: 1.2TB (then $10/50GB). Spectrum/AT&T Fiber/T-Mobile: none. |
| Price during outages | Most don’t credit. Ask: “Pro-rated credit for >4hr outage?” |
| Static IP / business class | Residential plans block inbound ports. Need business tier ($20–$50 more). |
| Router vs. modem | Some “modem rental” is a gateway (modem+router). You may still need a router. |
| Moving/transfer fees | $50–$100 to move service. T-Mobile: free self-move. |
| Auto-pay discount | $5–$10/mo for auto-pay + paperless. Often required for promo price. |
